I was born in Waialua, a small community located outside the town of Wahiawa, on the island of Oahu. I have been dancing the hula since the age of three years old and performed since the age of five years. I started the art of hula dancing under the tutelage of Hula Master (Kumu Hula) Moana Abiva where I learned ancient and modern hulas, including dances with implements such as the puili sticks (bamboo sticks), the ipu drum, and the uli uli (feathered gourds). While in the Hawaiian Islands I have danced many venues including family gathering, community celebrations and festivals, school and dance class performances, and military bases Officer's Club functions. Once relocated to the mainland, my love for the hula inspired me to perform and eventually teach various hula dances to mainstream Americans. While residing in Wilmington, North Carolina, I have performed in annual celebrations on the deck of the Battleship USS North Carolina, a float sponsored by the Domestic Violence Shelter & Services in 2001, Azalea Festival Multicultural stage since 2004 through 2011, New Hanover, Brunswick, and Pender County public schools, community and cultural events.
I have taught the hula through the YMCA, Cape Fear Community College Pre-School program, Carolina Beach Recreation Center, Wilmington Athletic Club, Cory Everson’s Fitness Studio (“Hula for Health” workouts), at various senior centers, Fort Fisher Aquarium, and the Wrightsville Beach Recreation Department.
Through my many connections with the islands of Hawaii, I directly marketed Hawaiian music, implements, jewelry, flowers, and authentic Hawaiian decorations and accessories to the public.
